Engravings From Drawings by John Webber, at Nootka
Remarks
C.W. Jefferys' notes about this picture from The Picture Gallery of Canadian History Volume 2
John Webber (1752-1793) was born in London of Swiss parentage. He was appointed draftsman on Cook's last voyage in 1776. He made many drawings of the scenery and inhabitants of the South Sea islands, and of the northern coasts of America and Asia. He was present at Cook's death, of which he later made a drawing. On his return to England he was engaged for some years in preparing the drawings and supervising the engravings made from them, which were published in the official narrative of the expedition. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy, and gained a considerable reputation as a landscape painter.
Observe in the interior view the fish hung from the rafters to dry in the smoke.
