What was the Canadian Art world of fifty years ago as seen by the eyes of a young student? (May 1944)

"But the mistress who called us most compellingly was Nature. We got to know and love the Ontario landscape. We were walkers, we tramped the dusty roads, not yet asphalted highways, perilous with motor cars. We hired canoes or clubbed together and bought one and explored the neighbouring lakes and rivers and camped for our brief holidays in Muskoka. My own first real sketching trip was a couple of weeks on the Niagara frontier where I tried to paint the whirlpool and the gorge at Queenston. It cost me I think about fifteen dollars, and I came home with ten cents still unspent."
